A group of three finals year computer engineering students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has developed a smart prepaid water metering system that tracks the usage of water in the home right on mobile phones.
Sometimes, these meter readers make mistakes which result in misunderstandings between homes and the Water Distribution Company. This new system is here to help track and give the accurate calculation so you know the exact amount you’re paying each month.
The team decided to design a meter which can measure the volume of water consumed electronically. The system then synchronises the meter records remotely, track and update metering data remotely.
Ebenezer Azumah disclosed, “We wanted to design a meter that allows users to track water usage using an APP and Water companies can track all meters deployed all over the world”.
The smart prepaid water metering system includes a web app, hardware with a processor, and a mobile APP.
Water flowing through the meter sends pulses to the controller, which computes the inflow. The calculation is then sent to the remote server. The remote server’s job is to calculate the bill and provide real-time info of the water flow rate and consumption.
One of the team members, Sylvanus Quarm said, “When you’re not around and water is overflowing the plot will tell you water is still flowing meaning Tap has been opened or there’s either problem with the meter.”
Users will be able to detect leakages and remotely shut water supply to homes to prevent bill escalation and water wastage.
Eric Awudi Okyere also added that the end-user part of the system, the mobile app, has mobile money payments incorporated so users could easily make payments of their bills.
“The customer can see the lists of all payments and the method and the customer can make a payment where you enter the phone number, ID and amount.”
The team says water distribution companies can use the system to detect leakages along with the distribution system. This will essentially speed up patching leakages and saving some money from water leakages.
